The stability issues of perovskite photovoltaics

June 1, 2020

UZ INSIGHTS: Lauded as the next-generation solar cell, perovskite material has raised much attention. In recent years, we have witnessed the fast development of perovskite photovoltaics and efficiency increases of over 25%. However, stability issues must be solved before we can see real application and commercialization.

Environmental stability issues include moisture, oxygen, light, and heat. Humidity was the first problem to be identified, and it has since been investigated and successfully strategized in device design and fabrication. Unlike previous assumptions, light and oxygen also have an effect on the microstructure a well as the electrical and photophysical properties of perovskites. And therefore, also on its stability.

We may see that advanced encapsulation techniques will solve some of the stability issues (moisture and oxygen). However, the thermal stability issue has not yet been properly addressed. In addition, the intrinsic molecular dissociation and ion migration inside perovskites are also key issues affecting long-term stability of perovskite photovoltaics.

This paper, published in Progress in Energy on May 27, 2020, gives a timely review on the recent progress of all these intrinsic and environmental stability issues for perovskite photovoltaics and corresponding possible solutions.
